China’s scholarships are open to people from almost every country, thanks to educational agreements. Applying is easy, and there aren’t many requirements. These scholarships give a good amount of money, which is helpful because universities in China can be expensive. There are other scholarships too, like ones between universities, from private groups, or from Chinese universities. In this article, we’ll mainly talk about the most famous and easy-to-apply-for scholarships in China.
There are three most popular scholarships to study in Chinese universities:
Deciding on the right Chinese scholarship can be a bit tricky. First, think about what you want to study—either Chinese language or a degree like a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD. Your choice of city for studying also matters as it affects the scholarships available. The entities giving scholarships have agreements with many universities across China. These entities, including the government and Confucius Institute, are all part of the government body.
Many scholarships come from these agreements, and each university gets a certain number based on the type of course. Applying for a Chinese government scholarship can be highly competitive due to students from all countries being eligible.
Once you know what and where you want to study, check each university for:
Research online, but not all universities publish this info on their websites, especially in English. It’s a good idea to email them directly to get the details. This step is crucial if you want to secure scholarships for studying in China.
Here are some tips about scholarships in China that might help you figure out which one is best for you, such as the Chinese Government Scholarship or the Confucius Institute Scholarship.
Many people from different countries come to study Chinese at Chinese universities. It’s a fantastic idea, especially if you’re already learning the language in your home country. Your progress can be much faster than studying in your city. Even if you’ve never learned Chinese before, it’s a great opportunity to try and see if you enjoy it and have a knack for it. I know friends who spent a year studying in China, and they learned more than I did in five years studying in the UK. Of course, it depends on your effort.
The three scholarships mentioned before welcome students taking Chinese language courses, with the Confucius Institute scholarship being the most focused on this. It also offers grants for doctoral students and researchers, although they are not as popular. This scholarship requires you to have studied Chinese before, preferably in one of its many branches worldwide.
If you want scholarships from national and provincial governments for a Chinese course and haven’t studied the language before, that’s okay. However, these scholarships are more competitive, so it might be a bit harder to get. The Chinese government scholarships are better if you want to study Chinese, as they offer more grants at many universities. Not all provincial governments provide scholarships for learning Chinese, so you’ll need to check university by university.
In summary, if you’ve studied Chinese, go for the Confucius Institute scholarship. If you meet all the requirements (explained in detail in the corresponding section), you’ll likely get a scholarship for the university you choose. If you haven’t studied Chinese or haven’t been a student of the Confucius Institute, you can apply for either the Chinese government or the provincial government where you want to study. Between the two, I suggest going for the first one because it has more options, giving you a better chance of getting a scholarship at your preferred place.
Many people choose to study in China for their undergraduate, master’s, or doctorate degrees, whether in Chinese or English. Like before, first, check which universities offer the course you want. Second, see if they provide scholarships from the government (national or provincial).
Contact the university to find out how many students they accept for the Chinese government scholarship and the provincial government scholarship. This info can be hard to find online. There are two ways to apply for the Chinese government scholarship. One is through authorized agencies like the Chinese embassy, and the other is directly at the university.
Both ways can grant the scholarship, but they have different quotas. Applying through the embassy means competing only with students from your country. If you apply directly to the university, you compete with students worldwide. This makes it tougher to get the scholarship if you’re already in China.
Provincial government scholarships only accept applications directly at the university. You must be in China to apply, and they often require an official Chinese or HSK diploma. This reduces competition, especially if you already have the required Chinese qualification.
Consider your situation and background to choose the best option. If you’re in your home country and don’t speak Chinese, applying for the Chinese government scholarship through your country’s embassy is a good choice. This scholarship can also fund a two-year Chinese language course. If you’re already in China with HSK4 and up, applying for the provincial government grant gives you better chances.
Two things to remember:
– If you apply to a prestigious university, there will be more competition.
– Decide if you want full or partial financing for both government scholarships. Partial scholarships are easier to get.
If you’re unsure, apply for as many scholarships as you can (as long as you meet the minimum requirements). While you can’t receive two scholarships in the same year, applying to multiple increases your chances of getting one.
Now I will present a complete guide about the popular scholarships in China. A step-by-step procedure to apply for these scholarships is also presented.
Chinese government scholarships finance undergraduate, postgraduate, and Chinese language study programs, as well as research stays throughout the country.
Regarding the type of funding, the Chinese government scholarships are divided into:
These types of scholarships are granted by the provincial governments, including the governments of the four Chinese cities called “municipalities under central jurisdiction” (Beijing, Tianjin, Chongqing, and Shanghai), since they function as provinces in themselves.
These scholarships apply to undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral studies, as well as to take Chinese language courses. However, not all universities have scholarships from their provincial government for all types of courses. You should review your case carefully.
Chinese Provincial Government Scholarships cover registration fees, accommodation in a university residence (sharing a room and bathroom with another person) and health insurance will be covered. If you are awarded a scholarship with full coverage, you will also receive a handsome amount of money per month for personal expenses.
The University Scholarship, also known as the President Scholarship, is a funding option for international students wanting to study in China. These scholarships are managed by China’s Ministry of Education and then handed over to universities. They are available for outstanding students pursuing Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Ph.D. degrees in various disciplines taught in English and Chinese in China’s top universities.
This scholarship is a full program set up by the Ministry of Education to support Chinese universities in the “985 Project” in recruiting postgraduate students. If you’re interested, reach out directly to the Chinese Higher Education Institute under this program for application.
To simplify the application process, China Scholar has introduced CS-Hub, a user-friendly application system. Applying for the CSC Scholarship can be confusing, as it involves sending hard copies of materials to universities based on quota systems. That’s where our well-organized process comes in, helping you navigate through the application stress-free.
Apply for the Belt and Road Scholarship in China to cover your study expenses. This scholarship, linked to the Belt and Road initiative, supports Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Ph.D. programs in China. It’s part of the Chinese government’s effort to promote international collaboration. To be eligible, you must come from countries along the Belt and Road Project route, including regions like the “21st-century maritime silk road,” connecting with South Asian countries, Europe, and Africa.
If you’re from a Belt and Road country, you have the opportunity to apply for this scholarship. Our Admission team will assist you in navigating the application process, which is similar to CSC Scholarships, local government, and other opportunities. The required documents and the review process are the same.

The Confucius Institute scholarship is very popular among students from all over the world. It is a government entity whose purpose is to promote knowledge of the Chinese language and culture throughout the globe. It annually offers numerous study grants to a total of 150 universities.
Although it also offers scholarships for specific doctoral studies, research stays, participation in international conferences, etc., in this section, I will exclusively focus on the scholarships offered for Chinese language and culture courses since they are in the most demanded.
Confucius Institute scholarships include tuition and lodging fees (in a university residence, in a room shared with another person), basic medical insurance, and a monthly allowance for personal expenses.
Although they are much less popular than the aforementioned scholarships, there is also the possibility of obtaining a scholarship to study for a year of study in a Chinese high school. As far as we know, no general scholarships are available and therefore the only opportunity will be through bilateral agreements between China and your country.
Interested students provide the required documents to PIEA for scholarship application.
PIEA utilizes its online application system to streamline the process.
The system matches students with suitable universities based on their preferences and academic backgrounds.
PIEA applies to at least three universities on behalf of the student.
If all three universities accept the student, the student is presented with options to choose from.
In case the student is not accepted by all three, no university change is allowed.
Once accepted by a university, the student receives an acceptance or pre-admission letter.
The university conducts an online interview with the student.
Successful clearance of the interview is a prerequisite for further processing.
Upon successful interview, the university issues the final admission notice.
A visa letter (JW-202/201) is provided to facilitate the student’s travel arrangements.
With the final admission notice and visa letter, the student makes necessary travel arrangements to commence their academic journey.
This structured process ensures a systematic approach to scholarship application, university selection, and successful admission for students applying through PIEA.
